San Lorenzo is a lively city and municipality in Honduras. It is located in the Valle department. The city has a population of about 35,560 people.
Spanish explorers first started San Lorenzo as a small village in 1522. It officially became a city in 1909. Today, it is the most important port city for Honduras on the Pacific coast. The city is also located right on the famous Pan American Highway.

Exploring San Lorenzo's Location
San Lorenzo is in the southern part of Honduras. It is about 60 miles (a 2-hour drive) south of Tegucigalpa. Tegucigalpa is the capital city of Honduras.
The city is also close to other countries. It is about 21 miles east of the border with El Salvador. It is also about 50 miles west of Nicaragua. San Lorenzo sits at an important crossroads on the Pan American Highway.
People of San Lorenzo
In 2013, about 41,297 people lived in the San Lorenzo municipality. Most of the people living here are Mestizo. This means they have mixed European and Indigenous heritage.
A smaller number of people are White or Black. There are also a few Indigenous people. The city has grown quite a bit over the years.
San Lorenzo's Economy
San Lorenzo is one of the most developed cities in southern Honduras. Its economy mainly focuses on a few key areas. The shrimp industry is very important here.
Tourism also brings many visitors to the city. Agriculture is another big part of the economy. Farmers in San Lorenzo grow crops like watermelon, melon, and other fruits.
The city has a public market where people can buy goods. There are also several banks and many restaurants. These restaurants are often found in La Cabaña, a popular tourist area. Some of the larger hotels include El Gran Hotel Miramar.
Culture and Fun in San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo celebrates its patron saint every August. This is a special time for the community. One of the city's best-kept secrets is "Sopa Marinera." This is a delicious and hearty seafood soup.
Many tourists visit the area, especially those sailing in the Gulf of Fonseca. They come to enjoy the local culture and food.
There is a small city park with fun concrete animals for kids. You can find a shrimp, shark, crab, and a pelican to play on. A newer park was built in 2007 near La Cabaña. It has a monument honoring sailors from the past and present.
Getting Around San Lorenzo
Most of the streets in San Lorenzo are paved. This makes it easy to travel around the city. There is an old airstrip near the city center, but it is no longer used.
The closest airport with regular flights is Toncontin International Airport. This airport is located in Tegucigalpa. San Lorenzo also has an important port called Puerto de Henecan. This port opened in 1979 and helps with trade.
