How San Nicasio Started
San Nicasio was created in 1999. It was founded by Rafael del Rosal Lopez and his wife, Carmen Osuna. They started their company in Priego de Córdoba, a town in the mountains of Andalusia, Spain. In the United Kingdom, these chips are sold by Fayrefield Foods. They aim to sell them in famous stores like Harvey Nichols and Harrods.
What Makes These Chips Special?
San Nicasio chips are made by hand in small batches. They use special potatoes from Catalonia, Spain. The chips are cooked in extra virgin olive oil. This olive oil comes from the "Priego de Córdoba" area. This means it is a very specific and high-quality oil. They also use Himalayan pink salt. This is a type of rock salt mined in Pakistan. As of 2012, the chips only come in a salted flavor. You can buy them in two sizes: 40 grams and 190 grams.
How They're Cooked
These chips are cooked slowly. This is different from most other chip brands. The owner, Rafael Lopez, says this slow cooking helps stop bad substances from forming. This makes the chips healthier and better.
Why Are They So Pricey?
When these chips first came out in the United Kingdom, many people talked about their price. A large bag cost about £4. This was almost twice the price of regular chips. A magazine called The Grocer wondered if people would pay so much for a snack. Another publication, The Rich Times, said experts were not sure if such an expensive product made sense.
