San Pablo Atlazalpan is a town in Mexico, located in the State of Mexico, near the city of Chalco. About 11,000 people live here.

Exploring San Pablo Atlazalpan's History

The main church in San Pablo Atlazalpan is dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul. It was built a long time ago, in the 18th century. The inside of the church was updated in 1982. There's also an old building called a hacienda in town, named Axalco, but no one knows exactly when it was built.

Understanding Past Community Challenges

In 1979, a new priest arrived in San Pablo Atlazalpan. He introduced some new rules for people attending the main church. For example, he said women should not wear trousers or short skirts, and their heads should be covered. He also started holding church services in Latin, which was different from the usual Spanish.

These new rules caused some disagreements among the townspeople. Two groups formed: one group liked the traditional Latin services, and another group preferred the services in Spanish with fewer rules. The group that liked Spanish services started holding their meetings in a house and invited other priests. Both groups wanted to use the name "St Peter & St Paul" for their churches.

The local church leaders supported the group that preferred services in Spanish. For a while, people in the town found it hard to work together because of these differences. Even families were divided. Over time, other religious groups also came to the town.

The disagreements finally ended in 2004. A court decided that the main church should be returned to the group that preferred services in Spanish. The other group decided to build their own church, which opened in 2011. Since then, both groups have lived peacefully in San Pablo Atlazalpan.

Fun Festivities and Celebrations

San Pablo Atlazalpan has several fun public celebrations each year.

Honoring Saint Peter and Saint Paul

The Delicious Tamale Fair

In December, the town hosts the "Tamale Fair" for one week. People who make tamales, a popular Mexican dish, come together to show off their best creations. They also sell their tasty tamales to everyone who comes to the fair. It's a great chance to try different kinds of tamales!
