Sanatorium is a small, unincorporated community in Simpson County, Mississippi, United States. It is located northwest of the town of Magee. This community has a special history because of a hospital that once stood there.
Discovering Sanatorium, Mississippi
Sanatorium got its name from the Mississippi Tuberculosis Sanatorium. This was a special hospital built in 1916. From 1918 to the 1950s, it helped people who had tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a serious lung disease. The hospital provided care and a place for patients to recover.
A New Purpose for the Old Hospital
In 1976, the old hospital buildings found a new purpose. They were given to the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. The site was then renamed Boswell Regional Center. Today, Boswell Regional Center helps people with special needs. It is a place where individuals with developmental disabilities can receive care and support.
One important building there is Dexter Hall. It is the main building of the center. In 2014, Dexter Hall received a special award. This "Heritage Award for Restoration" recognized the great work done to restore and preserve the building.
Life and Landmarks in Sanatorium
Sanatorium is located between two important roads. These are the current U.S. Route 49 and Mississippi Highway 149. Highway 149 was once known as Old Highway 49.
Years ago, Sanatorium was home to something fun: the only drive-in movie theater in the area! People could watch movies from their cars. There was also a hotel called the Scaife (San) Hotel. It was owned by a local judge, George Grubbs. Sadly, this old hotel was destroyed by a fire on May 18, 2020.
Just north of the community, you can find Legion Lake. This lake is a state-operated place for recreation. It's a spot where people can enjoy outdoor activities. In the 1990s, the local post office in Sanatorium was closed. The community's postal address was also changed.
