Sanchez Peak is a tall mountain peak in Antarctica, standing about 2,800 meters (or 9,200 feet) high. It's part of a long, raised area of land called a ridge that stretches east towards Mount Osborne. This peak is located in the southern part of the Sentinel Range, which is a major mountain chain within the Ellsworth Mountains.

The peak was officially named in 2006 by a group called the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN). They are responsible for naming places in Antarctica. Sanchez Peak was named after Richard D. Sanchez. He was a very important scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey. Richard Sanchez was an expert in using special technologies like remote sensing (looking at Earth from far away), image analysis (studying pictures of Earth), GPS (Global Positioning System, which helps find exact locations), and GIS (Geographic Information Systems, which helps manage maps and location data). He used these tools to create maps of Antarctica.

Where is Sanchez Peak?

Sanchez Peak is found at specific coordinates: 78°38′ South and 85°00′ West. This means it's in a very cold, remote part of Antarctica. It's located about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) east of another peak called Mount Craddock and about 1.16 miles (1.87 kilometers) west of Stolnik Peak. The area around Sanchez Peak was first mapped by the United States in 1961, and these maps were updated in 1988.

Maps of the Area

To see Sanchez Peak and the surrounding mountains, you can look at special maps:

  • Vinson Massif. This is a topographic map, meaning it shows the shape and height of the land. It's at a scale of 1:250,000, which means one unit on the map represents 250,000 units in real life. This map was made by the US Geological Survey in Reston, Virginia, in 1988.
