Sancho Alfonso of Castile (1342–1374) was an important figure in the history of Castile, a kingdom that was once part of what is now Spain. He was known in Spanish as Don Sancho Alfonso de Castilla. He held the title of Infante, which means he was a son of a king, and he was also the 1st Count of Alburquerque.

Who Was Sancho Alfonso?

Sancho Alfonso was born in Seville in 1342. He was one of the many children of Alfonso XI of Castile, who was the King of Castile. His mother was Leonor de Guzmán. Sancho was born outside of marriage, which was common for royal families at that time.

Early Life and Family

Sancho Alfonso grew up as part of a large and powerful family. His father, King Alfonso XI, had many children with Leonor de Guzmán. This made Sancho part of a big group of half-brothers and sisters. Being an Infante meant he was a prince, even though he was not in line to become king himself.

A Time of Trouble in Castile

Sancho Alfonso lived during a difficult time in Castile. After his father, King Alfonso XI, died, his half-brother, Peter of Castile, became king. Peter's rule was often seen as unfair and harsh by many nobles, including Sancho. Because of this, Sancho joined other important nobles in a revolt against King Peter. This was a dangerous time, as conflicts between royal family members and nobles were common.

Marriage and Children

In 1373, Sancho Alfonso married Beatrice of Portugal. Beatrice was the daughter of Peter I of Portugal, who was the King of Portugal. Their marriage helped to create ties between the royal families of Castile and Portugal.

Sancho and Beatrice had two children:

Sancho also had another daughter named Leonor Sánchez de Castilla.

Death

Sancho Alfonso of Castile passed away on March 19, 1374, in Burgos. His tomb can be found in the Cathedral of Burgos.
