Sanctification facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The word sanctification means making something or someone holy or setting them apart for a special purpose. It comes from the Latin words sanctus (holy) and facere (to make).

When an object or place is sanctified, it means it's made special and treated with respect, often through a ceremony. For example, a church building might be sanctified. A person can also be "set apart for a special purpose," like when a priest or pastor is ordained for their religious work.

What is Sanctification?

Sanctification also describes a journey where a person becomes more moral and grows closer to God. This process doesn't always involve a ceremony. People who achieve a high level of holiness are sometimes called Saints. Some churches have official lists of saints who were recognized for their very holy lives.

Sanctification in Christianity

In many Protestant churches, all Christians are seen as saints. They are expected to grow closer to God and live a life that follows the teachings of Jesus. To become sanctified, Christians often read the Bible, pray, worship God and Jesus, and share their faith with others.
