Sandra Saouaf is an American immunologist, a scientist who studies the body's immune system. She focuses on researching autoimmune diseases. These are conditions where the body's defense system mistakenly attacks its own healthy parts.
Some examples of autoimmune diseases she studies are rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. Her work aims to find new ways to treat these illnesses.
A Scientist's Journey
Sandra Saouaf began her science career in college. She earned a degree in biochemistry (the study of chemicals in living things) from Rutgers College. After that, she went to the University of Pennsylvania to get her PhD, which is a high-level degree for experts, in immunology.
After finishing her education, Dr. Saouaf did special research training at a company called Bristol-Myers Squibb. She then worked for another company, GlaxoSmithKline, before going back to the University of Pennsylvania to continue her research.
Later, Dr. Saouaf started her own consulting business. She used her expertise to help drug companies find new treatments for autoimmune diseases more quickly. In 2012, she and her team at the University of Pennsylvania made an exciting discovery. They found a possible new way to treat these diseases using medicine taken by mouth. This led her to start her own company, Atlantic Bio Sci, LLC.
In 2013, her work was recognized when she won a special award, called a Fellowship, from the Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs.
