Distribution of the sandstone false antechinus

The sandstone false antechinus (pronounced an-TEK-in-us), also known by its scientific name Pseudantechinus bilarni, is a small, meat-eating marsupial. It's a bit like a tiny, furry hunter! This animal lives in different rocky areas across Australia's Northern Territory.

Naming the Sandstone False Antechinus

Scientists first found the sandstone false antechinus in 1948. This happened during a special trip by American and Australian explorers to a place called Arnhem Land.

In 1954, scientists officially described and named this new animal. They gave it the species name bilarni. This name sounds like "Bill Harney," who was an Australian writer and nature lover. He joined the expedition that found the animal.

Over time, scientists have changed their minds about which group this animal belongs to. At first, they thought it was part of the Antechinus family. For a long time, it was believed to be in the Parantechinus group. That's why it was sometimes called the "Northern dibbler." Now, scientists agree it belongs to the Pseudantechinus group. There are six different species in this group.

What Does It Look Like?

The sandstone false antechinus is an insectivore, which means it mostly eats insects. It's a type of dasyurid, a family of marsupials that includes quolls and Tasmanian devils.

These animals are very active during their breeding season, which is from May to July. Many male antechinuses become very tired after breeding. However, about 25% of both males and females live to see a second year.

This small animal has a few special features. It has a very long, narrow snout. Its fur is usually a bit more grayish than other animals in its group. Unlike some animals that are only active at night, the sandstone false antechinus is partly active during the day.

Where Does It Live?

The sandstone false antechinus prefers to live in rocky places. You can find it in the "Top End" region of the Northern Territory. It also lives near the Gulf of Carpentaria. This animal can even be found on coastal rock platforms on Marchinbar Island.
