Sandwick is a small village, also known as a hamlet, located on the island of Whalsay in the Shetland Islands, Scotland. It is often considered part of the larger village of Symbister, right next to an area called Harlsdale. Sandwick is found in the southwestern part of Whalsay, just south of Symbister's main area. A place called Clate is even further south.

Discovering Sandwick

Sandwick is a quiet and interesting place. It is part of the parish of Nesting. This area is known for its beautiful natural features and a bit of history.

Where is Sandwick?

Sandwick is located on Whalsay, one of the many islands that make up the Shetland Islands. The Shetland Islands are found off the northern coast of Scotland. Just off the coast of Sandwick, you can see a small island called the Holm of Sandwick.

Sandwick's Past

During a time of war, the British military set up a radar camp near Sandwick. Radar is a system that uses radio waves to detect objects. Even in 1986, some of the buildings and structures built by the military were still being used. In the early part of World War II, a type of airplane called a Catalina bomber had an accident in the area.

Nature and Scenery

To the west of Sandwick village, you will find the Loch of Sandwick. A "loch" is the Scottish word for a lake. This loch is a peaceful spot. Around the lake, there are ancient sites known as burnt mounds. These are piles of cracked stones that show where people used to heat water for cooking or bathing a very long time ago. Along the coast near Sandwick, there are also interesting caves to explore.
