Sandy was a small community in Taylor County, West Virginia, in the United States. It was once a place where people lived, but today, you won't find it on a map because it's completely underwater!

Sandy: A Town Under Water

Sandy was a community that wasn't officially part of a city or town. It was a small settlement where people lived and worked. However, its story took a unique turn.

How Sandy Disappeared

The community of Sandy became submerged when the Tygart Dam was built. This large dam was constructed between 1934 and 1938. Its main purpose was to control floods and help manage the water flow in the Tygart Valley River.

When the dam was finished, it created a huge body of water called Tygart Lake. This new lake covered the area where Sandy used to be. Because of this, the entire community, including its homes and roads, ended up at the bottom of the lake.
