The Sandy River is a small river in Virginia, a state in the United States. It is about 12.9 miles (20.8 kilometers) long. This river is a branch, or "tributary," of the Bush River.

The Sandy River is an important part of a bigger water system. Its waters eventually flow into the Appomattox River, and then into the James River. The James River is one of the largest rivers in Virginia. This whole network of rivers and streams is called the James River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river or lake.

Where the Sandy River Starts and Flows

The Sandy River begins in a place called Prince Edward County. It starts northeast of a small village named Green Bay.

The River's Journey

From its start, the Sandy River flows mostly north. As it travels, it passes through different types of land.

Through Forests and Farms

The river flows through the Prince Edward State Forest. This is a protected area with many trees and wildlife. It also winds its way through farmland. Finally, the Sandy River joins the Bush River. This meeting point is very close to where the Bush River itself meets the Appomattox River. This area is near the town of Farmville.
