Sandy Run, South Carolina facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sandy Run is a small community in Calhoun County, South Carolina, South Carolina, United States. It's not a city, but a place where people live and work. The land here is about 154 feet (47 m) above sea level.

Sandy Run gets its name from a local stream called Sandy Run. This stream flows through Sandy Run and nearby towns like Gaston and Swansea, eventually joining the Congaree River. Even though people live in Sandy Run, their mail addresses might say Gaston or Swansea.

One of the most famous things about Sandy Run is that it hosts the United States Marine Corps Mud Run. This is a fun, challenging race where people run through muddy obstacle courses!

The William Baker House is an old building in Sandy Run. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 because it's an important historical site. Some people even say that General William T. Sherman might have stayed there way back in February 1865 during the American Civil War.

Local Businesses and Jobs

Sandy Run is home to some big companies, like DAK Americas, which provides many jobs.

There are also many smaller, local businesses that are important to the community. For example, Sandy Run Nursery is a family-owned plant nursery that has been around for many years. You can also find Sandy Run Florist and Sandwich Shop, where you can buy flowers and grab a bite to eat. If your lawnmower needs fixing, Ruck's Engine Repair is nearby to help out.

Community Growth

Sandy Run has been growing and changing a lot recently. Around 2019, the community started a big plan to improve the area. They looked at different ideas for how the land could be used in the future.

By the end of 2019, many of these improvements were finished. This included making roads better, setting up rules for what can be built where (called zoning), and even building new factories. These changes help Sandy Run continue to grow and create more opportunities for people.

Getting Around

Sandy Run is located near a busy highway called I-26. Sometimes, when there are big events like hurricane evacuations, the lanes on I-26 are reversed to help traffic flow better. When this happens, Sandy Run becomes a detour route, meaning more cars pass through the community.
