About the Sandy Gallito

Scientists group living things to understand them better. This is called taxonomy. The sandy gallito is special because it's the only bird in its group, called Teledromas. It doesn't have any different types (subspecies) within its own group. Its closest relative is another bird called the crested gallito.

What Does It Look Like?

The sandy gallito is about 17 cm (6.7 in) long, which is about the length of a regular pencil. Male birds usually weigh around 35 to 42 g (1.2 to 1.5 oz). Female birds weigh about 36 g (1.3 oz).

Colors and Feathers

Adult sandy gallitos have light cinnamon-colored feathers on their head, back, and wings. Their central tail feathers are also cinnamon. The rest of their tail is a darker, blackish color.

Their throat and chest are white. This white color blends into a light cinnamon on their sides and under their tail. Young sandy gallitos are thought to have similar colors.

Its Song

The sandy gallito has a special song. It makes loud "tchowk" sounds. It repeats these sounds up to five times in some areas. In other places, it might repeat them up to 10 times.

Where Does It Live?

The sandy gallito lives all year round in the eastern part of the Andes mountains in Argentina. You can find it from the southwestern part of Salta Province in the north, all the way down to Río Negro Province in the south.

Its Home

This bird usually lives at high altitudes, up to 3,500 m (11,500 ft) high. In Salta, it can even be found up to 4,000 m (13,000 ft). Its home is a dry, shrubby area with lots of sand and gravel. It likes dry riverbeds and ravines where there isn't much plant life.

How It Behaves

What It Eats

The sandy gallito mainly eats arthropods, which are creatures like insects and spiders. It looks for its food only on the ground. It tries to stay hidden by quickly running between bushes.

Reproduction and Nests

Sandy gallitos build their nests in a special way. They make an open cup-shaped nest out of grass. They usually build this nest at the end of a tunnel. This tunnel can be up to 50 cm (20 in) long. The female birds lay their eggs between November and February.

Is It Safe?

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has looked at the sandy gallito. They have decided it is a species of "Least Concern." This means they are not worried about it becoming endangered anytime soon.

Even though we don't know exactly how many sandy gallitos there are, scientists believe their population is stable. The bird is thought to be quite common in its habitat. It also lives in several protected areas. Its sandy, dry home is not good for farming, which helps keep its habitat safe.
