History of Sanford
Sanford was founded in 1927. This happened after a lot of natural gas was found in an area called the Panhandle Gas Field. The town got its name from a rancher named James McEuin Sanford. He lived from 1864 to 1933 and was an important person in the area.
Sanford's Location and Size
Sanford is in the southwestern part of Hutchinson County. It is located where two roads, Ranch Road 687 and Ranch Road 1319, meet. The town is about 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of the Sanford Dam. This dam is on the Canadian River and helps form Lake Meredith. Sanford is also about 11 miles (18 km) northwest of Borger, which is the main town and government center for Hutchinson County.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town of Sanford covers a total area of 0.35 square kilometers (0.13 square miles). All of this area is land.
