Sant'Andrea Frius (called Sant'Andria ‘e Frius in the Sardinian language) is a small town in Italy. It is a comune, which means it's like a municipality or local government area. This town is located in the Province of South Sardinia on the island of Sardinia.

Sant'Andrea Frius is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) north of Cagliari, a larger city. It shares its borders with several other towns. These include Barrali, Dolianova, Donorì, Ortacesus, San Basilio, San Nicolò Gerrei, Senorbì, and Serdiana.

History of Sant'Andrea Frius

The area where Sant'Andrea Frius is located has a very long history. People have lived here since prehistoric times.

Ancient Settlements

Evidence shows that people lived here thousands of years ago. There are ancient stone towers called nuraghi in the area. These towers were built by the Nuragic civilization. They show that the land was important even then.

Later, the Phoenicians built a stronghold here. A stronghold is like a fort or a protected place. After the Phoenicians, the Romans took over. They built several villas, which were large country houses, in this area.

Middle Ages and Different Rulers

During the Middle Ages, Sant'Andrea Frius was part of a region called curatoria of Trexenta. This was a division within the Giudicato of Cagliari. A Giudicato was like an independent kingdom in Sardinia.

In 1258, the town became owned by the counts of Capraia. Then, from 1295, it was part of the Giudicato of Arborea. This was another powerful Sardinian kingdom.

In 1297, Mariano II of Arborea sold the town to the Republic of Pisa. Pisa was a strong city-state in Italy at that time. Pisa controlled Sant'Andrea Frius until 1353. That's when the Kingdom of Aragon conquered the area.

Modern Times

In 1821, Sant'Andrea Frius officially became part of the province of Cagliari. This was a step towards the modern administrative divisions of Italy.
