Capraia facts for kids
Capraia is a beautiful island that belongs to Italy. It's part of the Tuscan Archipelago, which is a group of islands off the northwest coast of Italy. Capraia is part of the Province of Livorno.
This island is about 62 kilometers (38 miles) from the city of Livorno by sea. It's also about 32 kilometers (20 miles) northwest of the island of Elba. Capraia was formed by a volcano, so it has a volcanic origin. The island covers an area of 19 square kilometers (7.3 square miles). Its highest point reaches 466 meters (1,529 feet) above sea level. Back in 2004, the small town (or comune) of Capraia Isola had a population of 366 people.
The people on Capraia produce wine, and the island is also a big center for anchovy fishing. Anchovies are small fish that are very popular to eat.
History of Capraia Island
Capraia became part of Genoa in 1527. At that time, it was made very strong with many forts and walls to protect it. In 1796, a famous British admiral named Horatio Nelson briefly took control of the island.
For many years, a part of the island was used as a special penal colony. This was like a prison where people worked on farms. However, this colony was closed down in 1986.
Capraia's Natural Beauty
Today, most of Capraia island is part of a national park. This means its natural beauty and wildlife are protected. About 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the north of Capraia is another island called Gorgona. Gorgona is also well-known for its anchovy fishing.
