The Sant Antoni Castle (also known as Castell de Sant Antoni in Catalan and Castillo de San Antonio in Spanish) was a strong fortress. It is located in the small village of Fornells, which is part of the Es Mercadal area in Menorca, Spain. This castle was built in the 17th century right by the local harbor. In fact, the town of Fornells grew up around this important building.

History of Sant Antoni Castle
The Sant Antoni Castle was built to protect the harbor of Fornells. This was a very important job because the island of Menorca was often attacked. Many countries wanted to control Menorca because of its useful location in the Mediterranean Sea.
Why the Castle Was Built
In the 17th century, pirates and enemy ships were a big threat. The castle helped keep the people of Fornells safe. It also protected the goods coming in and out of the harbor.
What Happened to the Castle
Today, only a few ruins are left of the Sant Antoni Castle. This is because it was taken apart by the Spanish. This happened after the British had controlled Menorca for a time. The Spanish also dismantled another important fortress, St. Philip's Castle, for similar reasons.
Protecting the Castle
Not far from the castle ruins, you can find the Fornells Tower. This was another defensive building. Its main purpose was to help protect the Sant Antoni Castle from attacks by enemies. It acted like a lookout point and an extra line of defense.
Location and Importance
The castle's location in Fornells harbor was very strategic. It allowed defenders to see approaching ships from far away. This gave them time to prepare for any attacks.
Fornells Today
Even though the castle is mostly gone, Fornells remains a beautiful village. It is known for its lovely harbor and traditional charm. The ruins of the castle remind us of its long and interesting history.
