Sant Julià de Cerdanyola is a small town and a local government area, also known as a municipality, in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of a region called Berguedà.

Location and Landscape

This town is nestled high up in the Pyrenees mountains, specifically in the Berguedà area. It sits in a natural dip or "hollow" in the land, about 1,000 meters (around 3,280 feet) above sea level.

To reach Sant Julià de Cerdanyola, you usually take a winding road. This road is quite steep and comes up from the town of Guardiola de Berguedà. Guardiola de Berguedà is located in the valley of the Llobregat river, which is much lower down.

Local Celebrations

The people of Sant Julià de Cerdanyola enjoy several special events throughout the year.

Town Festival

The main town festival is celebrated every year on December 5th. This is a day for the community to come together and enjoy various activities.

Fia-Faia: A Christmas Eve Tradition

On Christmas Eve, the town celebrates a unique and ancient tradition called the Fia-Faia. This celebration has roots in pre-Christian times and is connected to the winter solstice. The solstice is the shortest day of the year, when the sun is at its lowest point.

During the Fia-Faia, bundles of a plant called Cephalaria leucantha are used. These bundles are known as faies. The tradition involves bringing these faies from a large bonfire located outside the town. They are then carried into the main square of the village, called Plaça de l'església. This event is a way to mark the changing seasons and celebrate light during the darkest time of the year.
