Sant Salvador de la Vedella

Sant Salvador de la Vedella is an old monastery in Catalonia, Spain. It's a special kind of building called Romanesque. You can find it near a town called Cercs, in the Berguedà area, which is part of the province of Barcelona.

This monastery was started by Benedictine monks in the year 830. These monks came from another monastery called Sant Serni de Tavèrnoles. A person named Carlot Tavèrnoles became the leader, or abbot, of Sant Salvador de la Vedella in 835. After the 1100s, the monastery became less important. It was connected to a religious school in La Seu d'Urgell until 1580.

What is a Monastery?

A monastery is a place where monks or nuns live and work. They dedicate their lives to religious practices. Monks are men who are part of a religious order. They often live together in communities. The Benedictine monks follow rules set by Saint Benedict. These rules guide their daily life, work, and prayer.

Romanesque Architecture

The buildings at Sant Salvador de la Vedella are in the Romanesque style. This was a popular way to build churches and monasteries in Europe during the Middle Ages. Romanesque buildings often have thick walls and round arches. They also have strong pillars and small windows. This style made buildings look very solid and grand.

History of the Monastery

Early Beginnings

Sant Salvador de la Vedella was founded in 830. This was a long time ago, in the 9th century. Monks from Sant Serni de Tavèrnoles decided to build this new monastery. It was a time when many religious communities were being set up.

The First Abbot

Just five years after it was founded, in 835, Carlot Tavèrnoles became the abbot. An abbot is like the head or leader of a monastery. He was in charge of the monks and the monastery's activities.

A Time of Change

After the 12th century, the monastery's importance began to decrease. It was no longer as central as it once was. For many years, until 1580, it was linked to a seminary. A seminary is a school where people study to become priests. This connection was with the seminary in La Seu d'Urgell.

Location in Catalonia

The monastery is located in Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain. It's in the Berguedà comarca, which is a type of local area. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes. The monastery is close to the town of Cercs.
