Crafts and Traditional Clothing
Santa Apolonia is famous for its beautiful handicrafts. The town is especially known for its earthenware pottery, which is made from clay. This pottery tradition has been a part of the town's culture for many years.
The traditional clothing worn by the indigenous people here is also very special. The typical blouse, called a hüipil, is made of simple white cotton. It features colorful embroidered patterns, often in pink, green, and yellow. The skirt, known as a corte, is usually navy blue with white stripes.
People and Language
In 2002, Santa Apolonia had a population of 13,595 people. Most of the people living in Santa Apolonia are of Maya origin. They mainly belong to the Kaqchiquel group. Many people in the town, possibly over 90%, speak the Maya Kaqchikel language. This is the third most spoken indigenous language in Guatemala.
Climate and Farming
Santa Apolonia is located at an elevation of 2,200 meters (about 7,200 feet) above sea level. Because of its height, the town experiences different types of weather. It can range from semi-tropical to very cold. During the winter months, the region often has frosts. It has also been affected by heavy rains from tropical storms and hurricanes in the past.
The main crops grown in Santa Apolonia are maize (corn) and black beans. Farmers also grow snow peas, which are sent to markets in North America and Europe. Other important crops include carrots, onions, and tomatoes. The region also produces fruits like peaches, passion fruit (called granadilla), and soursop (called anona).
