Santa Bàrbara (Catalan pronunciation: [ˈsanta ˈβaɾβaɾa]) is a small town in Catalonia, Spain. It is a type of local government area called a municipality. Santa Bàrbara is part of the Montsià comarca, which is like a county.
This town is also part of the Taula del Sénia. This is a group of towns that work together. They share common interests and history.
Exploring Santa Bàrbara's Location
Santa Bàrbara is located on a flat area of land. It is at the northern edge of the Serra de Godall mountains. The town sits where important roads meet. These roads connect cities like Tortosa, Ulldecona, Amposta, and La Galera.
In the past, Santa Bàrbara was a key stop for travelers. It was also important for transhumant cattle herders. These herders moved their animals along old paths called lligallos. The town had inns where people could rest. Today, you can still find hotels and restaurants there.
Past Railway Connections
Before 1990, a railway line passed through Santa Bàrbara. This line connected Valencia to Tortosa. However, a part of the line was later removed. This included the section that went through Santa Bàrbara.
The train tracks were taken away. Now, the old train station buildings in Santa Bàrbara are empty. You can still see where the station once stood.
