It also has lovely gardens. The hotel first opened in 1927. Back then, it was called the Santa Barbara Biltmore. It was part of a group of hotels called Bowman-Biltmore.

A Look at the Biltmore's History

Building the Beautiful Biltmore

The Santa Barbara Biltmore was planned in 1926 and 1927. Reginald Davis Johnson was the architect. Ralph Stevens designed the gardens. They mixed different old styles for the hotel. These styles included Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival. They also used Moorish Revival designs. The hotel cost $1,500,000 to build. Work started on March 5, 1927.

Changes Over the Years

The hotel has had a few owners and names. In 1936, Allied Properties bought it. Then, in 1976, Marriott bought the hotel. They paid $5.25 million. Marriott changed its name to Marriott's Santa Barbara Biltmore.

In 1987, Four Seasons Hotels bought the hotel. They paid $55 million. The hotel was then called the Four Seasons Resort Santa Barbara.

Ty Warner's Restoration

In 2000, Ty Warner bought the hotel. He is famous for creating Beanie Babies. He paid $150 million for the hotel. Four Seasons Hotels still managed it. Ty Warner spent $240 million to make the hotel new again. He also brought back the old name. It became the Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara. Many people still call it 'The Biltmore'.

Art and Design

Fred William Stringer helped decorate the hotel. He made special designs and paintings. He was an artist from England. He moved to Canada, then to Southern California. He made backdrops for movies. He also decorated hotels and theaters.
