A Look at Its History
Santa Cruz del Comercio has a notable event in its past. On December 25, 1884, a strong earthquake hit the Granada region. This event is known as the Granadin earthquake. Earthquakes are sudden shakes of the ground. They happen when parts of the Earth's crust move.
The earthquake caused a lot of damage in Santa Cruz del Comercio. More than 70% of the houses in the town fell down. Another 20% of the homes were badly damaged. Sadly, 13 people lost their lives, and 19 others were injured. This was a very difficult time for the community. However, the people worked together to rebuild their town. This shows the strength and spirit of the community.
