Santa Fe is a small, unincorporated community located in Butler Township, within Miami County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. An unincorporated community is a place that does not have its own local government, like a city or town. It is usually part of a larger township or county.

Discovering Santa Fe's Past

Santa Fe was officially started in the year 1848. Its name likely comes from an important event during the Mexican–American War: the Capture of Santa Fe. This was a significant moment in history.

A post office was opened in Santa Fe in 1849. It helped people send and receive mail for many years. The post office stayed open until 1917.

Interestingly, this town might be why another place in Spencer County changed its name. That town, also once called Santa Fe, eventually became known as Santa Claus.
