Santa María Ahuacatitlán is a village located in the state of Morelos, Mexico. It is part of the larger area of Cuernavaca. The name "Ahuacatitlán" comes from a local language and means "place among avocados."

Santa María Ahuacatitlán is found north of the city of Cuernavaca in Morelos. It shares borders with other towns and villages. To the north, it is next to Huitzilac and San Pedro Huertas. On its east side, you will find Chamilpa and Ocotepec. To the south is Buena Vista, and to the west is Colonia del Bosque.

Records from the city of Cuernavaca tell us how Santa María Ahuacatitlán started. A long time ago, when Hernán Cortés and his group were approaching Cuernavaca, some people living there decided to leave the main city. They moved to the area where Santa María Ahuacatitlán is today, forming a new community.

Important Events and People

In 1952, a man named Gregorio Lemercier (who lived from 1912 to 1987) established a monastery in the village. It was called the Santa María de la Resurrección monastery.

The state of Morelos and the city of Cuernavaca faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico. In May 2020, Santa María Ahuacatitlán reported a few cases of infection. By December 2020, the village was listed as a high-risk area during the pandemic.

Who are the Famous People from Santa María Ahuacatitlán?

Genovevo de la O (1876–1952) was born in Santa María Ahuacatitlán. He was an important figure in Mexican history. He fought alongside Emiliano Zapata, a famous leader who worked for farmers' rights.

Genovevo de la O helped organize the Siege of Cuernavaca in 1914. He also signed the Plan de Ayala, which was a plan for land reform and justice for peasants. He spent his life fighting for the rights of farmers. Genovevo de la O is buried in Santa María Ahuacatitlán.
