Santa Olaya has an interesting past. After the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico became part of the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.

In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that 1,100 people lived in Santa Olaya barrio at that time. Over the years, the population of Santa Olaya has grown quite a bit.
