Santa Ysabel Resort & Casino was a gaming center in Santa Ysabel, California. It was owned and operated by the Santa Ysabel Band of Diegueño Indians. This means a Native American tribe ran the business.
The casino had many fun games. There were 349 slot machines and six tables for card games. You could also play live poker and blackjack. The casino was close to places like Lake Henshaw, Julian, and Warner Springs. Even though it was called a "resort & casino," it did not have a hotel.
History
The Santa Ysabel Resort & Casino first opened on April 11, 2007. The plan was to build a resort with a hotel later. However, these plans did not happen. The casino faced money problems soon after it was built.
A Big Win!
On April 20, 2011, something exciting happened. A person from Ramona, California, won a huge jackpot! They won over $1 million playing a special penny slot machine. This was the first time such a big win happened in California on this type of machine.
Challenges and Closure
The casino started to face big challenges. On July 2, 2012, the casino needed help with its money problems. It had lost a lot of money. Also, San Diego County sued the casino for unpaid fees.
A judge later decided that the casino could not use a special legal process to fix its money issues. This made the future of the casino and its 120 employees uncertain.
Finally, on February 3, 2014, the Santa Ysabel Resort & Casino closed its doors. This meant 115 staff members lost their jobs. The casino had also helped fund the local fire department. The future of the building is still being decided. The tribal chairman, Virgil Perez, said he wants to find new ways to create jobs for the community.
