Santiago Derqui's Early Life and Education
Santiago Derqui was the first child of Manuel José María Derqui y García and Ramona Rodríguez y Orduña. He went to the Córdoba National University. In 1831, he earned a degree in law.
After finishing his studies, he taught at the university. He was a professor of law, then of philosophy. Later, he became the vice-dean of the university.
Family Life
On May 14, 1845, Santiago Derqui married Modesta García de Cossio y Vedoya Lagraña. They had six children together. They had three boys named Manuel Santiago, Simón, and Santiago Martín Antonio. They also had three girls named Josefa, Justa Dolores Belisaria, and María del Carmen Modesta Leonor.
Santiago Derqui's Political Career
Derqui began his political career in the Corrientes Province. He first worked as an assistant, then became a minister in the government of José María Paz. Later, Justo José de Urquiza, who was a very important leader, gave him a special job. Urquiza sent Derqui to Paraguay to handle important business for Argentina.
Becoming a National Leader
After his mission in Paraguay, Santiago Derqui became a deputy for Córdoba Province. This meant he represented his home province in the national government.
In 1854, Urquiza chose him to lead the Ministry of Justice, Education and Public Instruction. For six years, Derqui worked hard in this role. He helped the young nation of Argentina grow and develop.
Santiago Derqui as President
After Urquiza's time as president, Santiago Derqui was elected as the new constitutional president. People hoped that because he was from Córdoba, not Buenos Aires, he could help unite the country. Many provinces often disagreed with the main federal government.
Challenges and Resignation
President Derqui agreed to change the national constitution. These changes were meant to make Buenos Aires happier. He also officially named the country República Argentina.
However, some of his decisions were not popular with other parts of the country. This caused a lot of unhappiness among the provinces. These disagreements eventually led to a major conflict known as the Battle of Pavón.
After the battle, Derqui found it very difficult to keep control. He decided to resign from his position as president. He then left Argentina and went to live in Montevideo.
Later Life
While he was living away from Argentina, another important leader, Bartolomé Mitre, helped him. Mitre helped Derqui return to Corrientes, which was his wife's hometown. Santiago Derqui lived there for a few more years before he passed away.
