Santino Solari (born in 1576 – died April 10, 1646) was a talented architect and sculptor from Italy. He is famous for his work mainly in Austria. Solari was born in a place called Verna, which is near Como, Italy.

In 1612, a powerful leader named Archbishop Markus Sittikus chose Solari to be the main architect for the city of Salzburg. Solari's designs brought a new style of building, called early Baroque, from northern Italy to Austria. This style was grand and dramatic. Santino Solari passed away in Salzburg and was buried in the historic St. Peter's Cemetery there.

What Did Santino Solari Build?

Santino Solari was a very busy architect and worked on many important projects. His work helped shape the look of Salzburg and its surrounding areas.

Fortifications and Defenses

Solari helped build strong defenses for the city and the area around Salzburg. These were like protective walls and forts. One example of his work on fortifications can be seen in Neumarkt am Wallersee. These structures were important for keeping the city safe.

Schloss Hellbrunn and Its Fun Fountains

One of Solari's most famous projects is Schloss Hellbrunn. This amazing palace is known for its special "trick fountains." These fountains were designed to surprise and entertain visitors with hidden sprays of water. It was a very clever and fun design for its time!

Salzburg Cathedral: A Grand Church

Solari also played a huge role in building the magnificent Salzburg Cathedral. He took the original plans made by another architect, Vincenzo Scamozzi, and changed them. Solari made the cathedral even grander and more in line with the Baroque style. The dome of the cathedral, which Solari designed, is a beautiful example of his work.

Santino Solari's Family: His Son Ignazio

Santino Solari's son, Ignazio Solari, also became an artist. Ignazio worked on the Salzburg Cathedral too. He helped paint the beautiful frescoes (wall paintings) inside the cathedral along with another artist named Fra Donato Mascagni. Ignazio also painted a special artwork called an altar piece, which shows the "Burial of Christ." This painting can be found on the north wall of the cathedral.
