Santo Domingo Este is a large city and the main capital of the Santo Domingo Province in the Dominican Republic. It's like a special part of a bigger city, with its own local government. It also has one smaller area called a municipal district, which is San Luis. Santo Domingo Este is located on the eastern side of the Ozama River. This river separates it from the main part of Santo Domingo. This area is mostly for homes, but it's growing with new shopping centers and stores.

History of Santo Domingo Este
Santo Domingo Este became its own separate city in 2001. This happened because of a special rule called Law 163-01. This law divided the Santo Domingo province from the Distrito Nacional, which is like the central capital area.
People first thought about having a separate local government for this area back in the 1970s. In 1984, the government talked about making a new province called Santo Domingo Oriental. However, this idea was not approved. They decided it would not follow the country's main laws.
