Building the First Fortress
The first Santísima Trinidad fortress was built in 1585. It was constructed by Alonso de Sotomayor, who was the Royal Governor of Chile at that time. The fortress was built right across the river from another fort called Fort Espíritu Santo. These forts were important for controlling the area around the Bio-Bio River.
Why the Fortress Was Destroyed
Governor Sotomayor left the fortress in 1591. After he left, the fortress was destroyed by the Mapuche people. This happened during a big uprising that followed the death of another governor, Martín García Óñez de Loyola. The Mapuche were fighting to protect their lands.
Rebuilding and Final Years
The Santísima Trinidad fortress was built again in 1603. This time, it was rebuilt by Governor Alonso de Ribera. However, the fortress did not last long after its second construction. It disappeared just a few years later.
