Sara Pereyra Baras (born April 25, 1971) is a famous Spanish flamenco dancer and choreographer. She was born in San Fernando, a city in the Cádiz region of Spain. Sara Baras is known for creating her own successful dance company.

Who is Sara Baras?

Early Life and Dance Training

Sara Baras was born in San Fernando, Spain, in 1971. She started learning to dance at a very young age. Her first dance teacher was her own mother, Concha Baras, who had her own dance school.

Soon after, Sara joined a dance group called Los Niños de la Tertulia Flamenca. With this group, she traveled around Spain, performing at different flamenco festivals in cities like Barcelona.

Starting Her Professional Career

When Sara was 24, she joined Manuel Morao’s dance company. She performed with them at the Teatro Flamenco Alhambra 89 festival in Granada. In the same year, she won first prize in a Spanish TV contest called "Gente Joven."

In 1991, Sara performed for two months in Paris, France, at the Edouard VII Theater. She was still with Manuel Morao’s company at this time.

Performing on Big Stages

In 1992, Sara performed at the "Bienal de Danza" in Lyon, France. She also danced at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. Later, she performed with her dance partner, Javier Barón.

During the worldwide exposition of Seville Expo 92, Sara danced at the Auditorio de la Cartuja. She was part of Manuel Morao’s show there.

In 1993, Sara won the "Madroño Flamenco" award in Montellano, Seville. This award recognized her as the most outstanding artist of the year. She also performed at the Festival de Sevilla with her show Flamenco Íntimo.

That same year, she danced at the Teatro Verdi in Génova, Italy. The show was called Mira qué flamenco.

Collaborations and Tours

In 1994, Sara danced for the famous flamenco singer Enrique Morente. This was at the Semana Flamenca de la Caja de Ávila festival. She also took part in the XXIII Festival de la Bulería de Jerez.

She toured for two months with Paco Peña's company, visiting several European countries. Sara also danced at the "Bienal de Sevilla" as a tribute to the flamenco dancer Antonio Ruiz Soler.

In May 1996, Sara was part of a show called Mujeres (Women). This show was organized by Merche Esmeralda's company. It premiered in Vitoria and then toured Madrid and Barcelona.

She was also a special guest artist in a show called Gitano (Gypsy). This production was by the dancer Antonio Canales. The show was presented at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla and toured many important theaters.

Creating Her Own Company

As a solo dancer, Sara performed in several tributes to Camarón de la Isla, a legendary flamenco singer. In 1997, she started her own dance company. Her company performed at the closing of the XXXVII Festival Nacional del Cante de las Minas.

As a guest artist, she danced for "El Güito's" Flamenco Company. This performance took place at the Teatro del Chatelet in Paris in 1999.

On April 2, 1998, Sara and her new company debuted in Murcia. Their show was called Sensaciones (Sensations). It explored different styles or "palos" of flamenco. Her company included seven dancers and seven musicians.

Later that month, she appeared on the TV show La Huella de España. In June, her company performed at the Festival de Evian, led by master Rostropóvich. In September 1998, her Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras premiered a show called Cadiz - La isla in Seville. This show was dedicated to her home region.

In October 1998, Sara hosted a show on Spanish television, TVE, called Algo más que flamenco. From January 8 to 14, 2001, she presented her work in Lyon, France.

New Shows and Film Appearances

In 1999, Sara premiered a new show called Sueños (Dreams). While performing another show, Juana la loca, she also rehearsed her next one, Mariana Pineda.

She danced at concerts for Chavela Vargas in several cities, including Granada, Cadiz, and Barcelona. She also performed in Mexico and Argentina.

Sara appeared in the film Iberia, directed by Carlos Saura. She created her own choreography for the film and worked with José Serrano on another. The movie was released in November 2005.

In July 1999, a scene for the movie Mission: Impossible 2 was filmed at the Casa de Pilatos in Seville. Sara Baras was part of this filming. She has also worked as a model for fashion shows and brands like Triumph and Cartier.

In 2003, Sara received the Spanish National Dance Award. This is a very important award for dancers in Spain.

In 2005, she continued touring with her show Sueños across Europe, the United States, South America, and Asia. On December 19, she premiered her show Sabores (Flavors) in Paris. Sueños completed a series of three shows that began with Sensaciones.

She also appeared in the film J: Beyond Flamenco by Carlos Saura in 2016.
