Sara Alexandra Lima Tavares (born February 1, 1978 – died November 19, 2023) was a talented Portuguese singer, songwriter, guitarist, and percussionist. She was born and grew up in Lisbon, Portugal. Her family came from Cape Verde, and Sara created a unique style of world music. Her songs blended sounds from Africa, Portugal, and North America.

Early Life and Music Beginnings
Sara Tavares's parents moved to Portugal from Cape Verde in the 1970s. Sara was born on February 1, 1978. From a very young age, she showed a great gift for music.
In 1994, when she was just 16, Sara won a national TV singing contest called Chuva de Estrelas
. She sang "One Moment in Time" by Whitney Houston. That same year, she also won the Festival da Canção. This win allowed her to represent Portugal in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. Her winning song was "Chamar a Música."First Albums and Success
Sara's first music release was an EP (a short album) called Sara Tavares & Shout in 1996. On this EP, she mixed gospel and funk music with her Portuguese style.
Her first full album, Mi Ma Bô
, came out in 1999. It was produced by Lokua Kanza.In 2017, Sara released her album FitxaduLatin Grammy Award for Best Portuguese Language Roots Album.

Sara Tavares wrote songs in Portuguese and also in Portuguese-based creole languages. While Portuguese was the main language in her music, she often mixed Portuguese with Portuguese Creole and even English in the same song. This made her music very special and interesting.
She was well-known for singing the European-Portuguese version of "God Help the Outcasts." This song was for the Disney movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Her version won a Disney Award for being the best version of the original song. In 2000, she also won a Portuguese Golden Globe award for Best Portuguese Singer.
Sara Tavares loved artists like Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, and Aretha Franklin when she was growing up. Her music was famous for blending different cultures, especially those from Portugal and Cape Verde. Sara was one of the artists who helped bring African music styles into popular music in Portugal.
Later Life
Sara Tavares passed away on November 19, 2023, in Lisbon. She was 45 years old.
