Sara Richardson Thomas, born on April 21, 1941, is an American educator and politician from Indianola, Mississippi. She served as a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives for the 31st District. She was first elected in 1998 and retired in June 2018. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early Life and Education

Sara Thomas grew up in a family of sharecroppers. This means her family farmed land owned by someone else and shared the crops. She worked hard and went to college. She attended Mississippi Valley State University and Delta State University.

A Career in Education

Before becoming a politician, Sara Thomas was a dedicated educator. She taught language arts for 21 years. She worked in public elementary schools in Sunflower County, Mississippi. After teaching, she became a principal, leading a school. She is married to Arthur Lee Thomas.

Public Service in Mississippi

In 1997, Sara Thomas's nephew, Bill Richardson, passed away. He had been the representative for the 31st district. Sara Thomas decided to run for the open position.

Serving in the House

She was elected in 1998 to fill the vacancy. Sara Thomas served in the Mississippi House of Representatives for 21 years. This is a long time to help make laws for the state! In late June 2018, she announced her retirement. Her last day in office was June 30, 2018.
