Sarah C. Andersen (born June 15, 1992) is an American artist who creates popular comics for the internet, known as webcomics. She is most famous for her webcomics Sarah's Scribbles and Fangs. Sarah currently lives in Portland, Oregon. She has worked with other artists and writers, like Andy Weir. Recently, she has spoken out against new computer programs that create art using text-to-image models, because she believes they can be unfair to human artists.

Sarah's Early Life

Sarah Andersen was born in Norwalk, Connecticut. As a child, she lived in different countries, moving between Denmark, Germany, and Connecticut.

While she was a student at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), Sarah started drawing and sharing her webcomic Sarah's Scribbles online in 2013. She posted it on a website called Tumblr. After she finished college in 2014, she started working on her webcomic full-time. The comic was first called Doodle Time. However, a company called GoComics asked her to change the name so they could share her comics with more people.

Sarah's Creative Journey

Becoming a Published Artist

In March 2016, Sarah Andersen released her first book of Sarah's Scribbles comics. It was called Adulthood is a Myth and was published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This company also published her next books: Big Mushy Happy Lump in 2017, Herding Cats in 2018, Oddball in 2021, and Adulthood Is a Gift! in 2024. People who read her first book said it was "hilarious" and "relatable." They liked how the webcomic showed the funny and sometimes tough parts of growing up.

Working with Other Creators

Sarah also worked with the writer Andy Weir on a graphic novel called Cheshire Crossing. This book came out in July 2019. The story was based on an older comic by Andy Weir. It features famous characters like Wendy Darling from Peter Pan, Dorothy Gale from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Alice Liddell from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In the story, these characters go to a special boarding school called "Cheshire Crossing."

New Stories and Challenges

In late 2019, Sarah Andersen started a new webcomic called Fangs. It's a supernatural romance story that she shared on the Tapas platform. In September 2020, Fangs was also published as a book by Andrews McMeel Publishing. It quickly became a bestseller, appearing on the Publishers Weekly Bestseller list that month and the New York Times Bestseller list in October 2020.

In January 2020, Sarah painted a large picture, called a mural, of her characters in Mexico City. It was part of a public art project. Sadly, the mural was painted over with graffiti just a few days later.

On September 20, 2022, her book Cryptid Club was published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was nominated for two Eisner Awards in 2023. These awards are like the "Oscars" for comics! It was nominated for Best Humor Publication and Best Writer/Artist, but it did not win.

Speaking Up for Artists

On December 31, 2022, Sarah wrote an article for the New York Times. In it, she talked about how new computer programs that create images, like Stable Diffusion, could affect artists. She explained that these programs might cause confusion, make it easier for people to use artists' work without permission, and even reduce how much money artists can earn. In January 2023, Sarah was part of a group of artists who filed a lawsuit against some companies that make AI art programs. She believes it's important to protect the rights of human artists.
