Sarah's Early Life
Sarah Andersen was born in Norwalk, Connecticut. As a child, she lived in different countries. She moved between Denmark, Germany, and Connecticut.
While studying at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), she started drawing. She began uploading her comic Sarah's Scribbles to Tumblr in 2013. After finishing college in 2014, she worked on her webcomic full-time. The comic was first called Doodle Time. However, GoComics asked her to change the name before they would share it.
Her Amazing Comics and Books
In March 2016, Sarah released her first book of Sarah's Scribbles comics. It was called Adulthood is a Myth. Andrews McMeel Publishing released this book. They also published her next book, Big Mushy Happy Lump, in 2017.
Later books included Herding Cats (2018), Oddball (2021), and Adulthood Is a Gift! (2024). The Independent newspaper called her first book "hilarious" and "relatable." They liked how the webcomic showed that being a grown-up can be tough.
Working with Other Creators
Sarah Andersen worked with the writer Andy Weir on a graphic novel. This book was called Cheshire Crossing and came out in July 2019. The story was based on an older comic by Andy Weir.
It follows three famous characters: Wendy Darling from Peter Pan, Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz, and Alice Liddell from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. They all go to a special boarding school called "Cheshire Crossing."
Fangs and Other Works
In late 2019, Sarah started a new webcomic. It was a supernatural romance called Fangs. She released it on the Tapas platform. In September 2020, Fangs was published as a book.
It quickly became a bestseller. It was a Publishers Weekly Bestseller in September 2020. Then, it became a New York Times Bestseller in October 2020.
In January 2020, Sarah painted a mural in Mexico City. It featured her characters as part of a public art project. Sadly, it was covered with graffiti within a few days.
Her book Cryptid Club was published on September 20, 2022. It was nominated for two Eisner Awards in 2023. These awards were for Best Humor Publication and Best Writer/Artist.
Standing Up for Artists
On December 31, 2022, Sarah wrote an essay for the New York Times. She wrote about the rise of computer systems that create images, like Stable Diffusion. She explained how these systems could cause problems for artists. These problems included confusion, using artists' work without permission, and reducing their income.
In January 2023, Sarah was part of a group of artists who took legal action. They were concerned about AI companies like Stability AI, Midjourney, and the art community DeviantArt. They wanted to make sure artists' rights were protected.
