The Story of Sarahville de Viesca
Sarahville de Viesca was started in 1834 by a man named Sterling C. Robertson. He named the new settlement after his mother, Mrs. Sarah Robertson. The other part of the name, "Viesca," honored Agustín Viesca, who was a Mexican governor at the time.
Where Was Sarahville de Viesca Located?
The town was built in a special spot right by the Brazos River. At this location, the river water used to drop about 10 feet (about 3 meters). This made it a well-known place to cross the river. It was an important crossing point for travelers and settlers.
Why Did the Town Disappear?
Sarahville de Viesca didn't last very long. In 1836, the people living there had to leave for a short time. This happened during an event called the Runaway Scrape, when many Texans fled from danger.
Attacks and Abandonment
Sadly, the town was left for good soon after. This was because of attacks from Native American groups in the area. It became too dangerous for people to live there safely.

After Sarahville de Viesca was abandoned, other small settlements tried to make a home in the area.
Fort Milam and Bucksnort
A fort called Fort Milam was built on the west side of the river. However, it was also left behind after a few years. Then, another small town named Bucksnort appeared on the east side of the river. But Bucksnort also disappeared when the nearby town of Marlin was founded. Marlin became the main town in the area.
Sarahville de Viesca Today
Today, you won't find a bustling town where Sarahville de Viesca once stood. Instead, there's a county park in the area. You can also find a special historical marker. This marker tells the story of the old town. It's located where Farm to Market Road 712 crosses the Brazos River, just south of Marlin.
