History of Satan's Kingdom
The area where the Farmington River flows through a gorge has been known as "Satan's Kingdom" for a very long time. People have used this name since at least the 1820s. The recreation area officially became part of Connecticut's state park system in 2012. This means it's a protected place for everyone to enjoy.
Things to Do at Satan's Kingdom
This recreation area is all about enjoying the river and nearby nature.
Tubing Adventures
One of the most popular activities here is tubing! You can rent tubes from a company right at the park. Imagine floating down the river on a big inner tube. The tubing trip is about 2.5 miles long. Along the way, you'll go through three sets of exciting rapids. It's a great way to cool off and have fun on a warm day.
Hiking and Exploring
While the recreation area itself is small, it's a gateway to more adventure. You can easily get to hiking trails in the nearby Nepaug State Forest. These trails include parts of the famous Tunxis Trail. You can reach these trails from Satan's Kingdom Road, which is on the south side of the bridge. It's perfect for exploring the woods and seeing nature up close.
