Sather Gate is a famous landmark at the University of California, Berkeley. It stands between Sproul Plaza and a bridge over Strawberry Creek. This gate leads into the heart of the university campus. A kind person named Jane K. Sather gave the gate to the university. She did this to remember her husband, Peder Sather. He was involved with the College of California, which later became the University of California. It's a special spot, recognized as California Historical Landmark No. 946 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Story of Sather Gate
Sather Gate was designed by John Galen Howard. It was built by Giovanni "John" Meneghetti and finished in 1910. The gate has a classic look, like old Greek and Roman buildings.
On top of the gate, there are eight special carvings called bas-reliefs. These carvings show different subjects of study. Four carvings show men representing law, writing, medicine, and mining. The other four show women representing farming, building design, art, and electricity. Professor Melvin Earl Cummings created these sculptures.
For many years, from 1910 to 1977, these carvings were removed. They were put back in 1979.
When it was first built, Sather Gate was the main entrance to the university from the south. But over time, the university grew. Now, the gate is further inside the campus, away from the city streets of Berkeley, California.
Fixing Up the Gate
Between October 2008 and April 2009, Sather Gate was carefully repaired. Workers focused on its metal parts, which are made of bronze and steel. These parts had worn out over time. The gate stayed open for people and cars during the repairs. The company Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. helped manage this work. The repairs won an award in 2010 from the California Preservation Foundation.
Sather Gate and Free Speech
Sather Gate is part of the famous Sproul Plaza. This area is a big center for student activities. Many important protests happened here during the Free Speech Movement in the 1960s.
Sather Gate is in one of the most famous photos from that time. The picture shows students walking through the gate in the fall of 1964. They are carrying a banner that says "Free Speech." This photo became a symbol of the movement.
