Saugor and Nerbudda Territories facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Saugor and Nerbudda Territories was a special area in British India. This region is now part of the central Madhya Pradesh state in India. It included important districts like Sagar, Damoh, Jabalpur, and Narsinghpur.

What Were the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories?

The Saugor and Nerbudda Territories were a group of lands that the British controlled in India. They were named after the city of Saugor (now Sagar) and the Narmada River (sometimes spelled Nerbudda). This area was important because of its location in the middle of India.

How Did the British Get These Lands?

The British gained control of these territories after a big conflict called the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818. This war was fought between the British and the Marathas, who were powerful rulers in India.

Lands from the Maratha Peshwa

Before the British took over, Saugor was a main city for a Maratha governor. After the war, the northern part of the territory was given to the British by the Maratha ruler known as the Peshwa.

Lands from the Bhonsle Maharaja

The southern part of the territories was also acquired by the British. This area included the city of Jabalpur and the upper valley of the Narmada River. It was given to the British by the Bhonsle Maharaja of Nagpur.

How Were the Territories Governed?

Once the British had control, the Saugor and Nerbudda Territories became part of the North-Western Provinces. These provinces included British lands in what is now the southern part of Uttar Pradesh state.

What Happened to the Territories Later?

The Saugor and Nerbudda Territories did not stay a separate region forever. In 1861, they were joined with another area called Nagpur Province. The British had taken over Nagpur Province in 1853. When these two regions combined, they formed a new, larger area known as the Central Provinces.
