Savage is a small community in Richland County, Montana. It's called an unincorporated community because it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. It's also a census-designated place (CDP), which means the U.S. Census Bureau counts it as a specific area for population statistics.

Savage is located right next to the Yellowstone River. You can find it along Montana Highway 16. It's about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of a larger town called Sidney.

The area was first listed as a CDP before the 2010 census. Before that, it was part of a different CDP called Knife River.

A Look Back at Savage's History

The community of Savage is named after H. M. Savage. He was an engineer who worked for the U.S. Reclamation Service. For many years, Savage was a very busy place. Farmers would ship their grain from here. Also, growers of sugar beets, who farmed near the river, used Savage as a shipping point.

These sugar beet farms became even more successful when a new sugar beet factory opened in Sidney in 1925. This made it easier to process the beets.
