The Savage-Stewart House is one of the oldest buildings in Athens County, Ohio, United States. It's located a short distance southeast of Canaanville along U.S. Route 50. This house has many special design details. These details were common in expensive buildings built in Ohio a long time ago. Because of its history and design, it has been named a historic site.

History of the Savage-Stewart House

The Savage-Stewart House is also known as the "Ackley Farm." Some of the buildings on this farm were built as early as 1804. The land for the farm was given to Abijah Savage. He was a captain in the Continental Army from Connecticut. He received the land for his service in the American Revolution.

The people who owned this farm were usually richer than their neighbors. This was because the property was located along the fertile land near the Hocking River. This rich land, called a floodplain, helped them grow good crops.

Unique Architecture and Design

The Savage-Stewart House is two stories tall. It is built of brick and sits on strong sandstone foundations. The house has many interesting features.

Inside, there is an amazing balustrade along the staircase in the hallway. A balustrade is a fancy railing with decorative posts. Outside, you can see a cornice with a special sawtooth-shaped molding. A cornice is a decorative trim along the top of a wall. The house also has fluted columns. These are columns with grooves carved into them.

The house doesn't fit into one specific architectural style. However, these design elements were typical of more expensive homes. They were built in Ohio soon after it became a state.

A Recognized Historic Site

In 1980, the Savage-Stewart House and five other buildings on the property were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. The house qualified for this list for two main reasons. First, it played a role in the area's history. Second, it has unique and historic architecture.

Even though the house has been mostly left alone and has become overgrown, it was still considered very historic. This was partly because of old farm equipment found in the sheds. This equipment was made before 1930 and was still safe inside the buildings.
