History of Savannah

Early Days and Growth

The community of Savannah started in 1854. It grew up along the old New York Central Railroad line. Thirteen years later, in 1867, Savannah became an official village.

It covered about 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) of land. By 1877, Savannah had grown quite a bit. It had three churches, a school, a hotel, and several shops. There was even a mill that used steam power.

The Great Fire of 1908

A big fire hit Savannah on November 3, 1908. It happened early in the morning and destroyed most of the village. Twenty-two buildings were burned down.

Twelve families lost their homes in the fire. Many buildings on Main Street were left in ruins. But the people of Savannah worked hard, and the village was eventually rebuilt.

Becoming a Hamlet Again

On March 21, 1978, the people of Savannah voted. They decided to change their village back into a hamlet. The vote was 134 in favor and 75 against.

The Village of Savannah officially stopped being a village on December 31, 1979. Now, the Town of Savannah handles all the local government tasks.
