Imagine stepping back in time to a grand old train station! The Savannah History Museum is located in what used to be a busy train station. This station, called Savannah Station, was built way back in 1860 by the Central of Georgia Railway. This was just before the American Civil War began.
These amazing buildings were recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 1976. This means they are super important to American history! Later, in 1978, the recognition grew to include the entire train complex, like the workshops and other buildings.
Today, this beautiful red brick building in historic downtown Savannah is home to two important places. It houses the Savannah Visitor Center and the Savannah History Museum. The museum is at 303 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. It opened its doors in 1989.
The whole area around the museum is special. You can still see parts of the old train yard, a blacksmith shop, a brick bridge (called a viaduct), and the big trainshed where trains were kept. There's even an old office car and a caboose to explore! The Coastal Heritage Society, a group that works to save important historical places, owns and takes care of this site.

Trains at Savannah Station
This station was once a very busy place for passenger trains. The Central of Georgia Railway ran several trains from here. These trains traveled between Atlanta, Macon, Georgia, and Savannah.
One famous train was the Nancy Hanks II. It carried passengers until 1971. That's when Amtrak took over most passenger train services in the United States.
