The Sawyer–Medlicott House is a special old home located where Bradford and River roads meet in Piermont, New Hampshire. It was built around 1820 and is a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. It's the only brick house of its kind in the small town. A man named Joseph Sawyer, who bought and sold land and was involved in politics, had it built. Because of its history and unique style, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

What the House Looks Like

The Sawyer–Medlicott House is found just west of the center of Piermont town. It's a two-and-a-half-story building made of brick. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides (called a side-gabled roof) and chimneys at each end.

The front of the house has five sections, with windows placed evenly around the main door. The front door itself is quite fancy. It has narrow windows on the sides and flat, decorative columns next to them. Above the door, there's a rounded window that looks like a fan, surrounded by an oval shape decorated with flower-like designs and a twisted rope pattern.

Inside, the house has a main hallway in the middle. A beautiful spiral staircase is the main feature of this hall. Many of the windows inside have special shutters that are built right into the wall. Also, many rooms have wooden panels on the lower part of the walls, made from wide boards.

Who Lived Here and Why It's Special

This house was built around 1820. It's important because it's the only brick building in Piermont that shows the Federal style of architecture.

The house was built for Joseph Sawyer. He was a person who bought and sold land, hoping its value would increase. He was also a politician, meaning he helped make decisions for the town and state. Joseph Sawyer was also one of the owners of the very first bridge that crossed the nearby Connecticut River into Bradford, Vermont. Today, the Piermont Bridge stands in that same spot.

Joseph Sawyer was very active in his town. He served on local groups and even represented Piermont in the state government. After he passed away, his property was sold to help settle his financial matters. However, later on, one of his nephews bought the house back, keeping it in the family.
