Scahentoarrhonon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Scahentoarrhonon (say "Ska-hen-toh-AH-roh-non") were a group of Indigenous people who lived in North America. They originally came from a place called the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. They called their home Scahentowanen, which meant 'It is a very great plain.' Not much is known about them today.

What Happened to the Scahentoarrhonon?

The Scahentoarrhonon are not well-known in history. They were first mentioned in a book called the Jesuit Relation in 1635. This book was written by Jesuit priests who explored New France (parts of North America).

Sadly, it seems the Scahentoarrhonon tribe was destroyed in 1652. This happened during a time known as the Beaver Wars. These wars were a series of conflicts in the 17th century. They involved the Iroquois and other tribes fighting over land and control of the fur trade.

Some people believe that any Scahentoarrhonon who survived these wars may have joined other tribes. They might have become part of one or more of the Five Nations (a powerful group of Iroquoian-speaking tribes).

What Language Did They Speak?

The Scahentoarrhonon people spoke a language called Scahentoarrhonon. This language was part of the Iroquoian language family. Languages in this family are related to each other, like different branches of a tree.

It is thought that their language was similar to other Iroquoian languages. These include Susquehannock, Wendat, Erie, and Wenrohronon.
