Schelte John "Bobby" Bus (born 1956) is an American astronomer. He is famous for discovering many minor planets. He works at the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaiʻi. He is also a leader at NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) in Hawaii, USA.

Who is Schelte Bus?
Schelte Bus finished his first degree in 1979 at California Institute of Technology. Later, in 1999, he earned his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
While at MIT, he worked with Richard Binzel. They studied main-belt asteroids using a special survey. This project was called SMASSII. It helped scientists learn more about these space rocks. The project collected data from 1993 to 1999. Schelte Bus also worked with Eugene Shoemaker during his studies.
As of 2017, he is still an astronomer at the University of Hawaii. He also helps lead NASA's IRTF.
Awards and Honors for Schelte Bus
An asteroid was named after him! It is called 3254 Bus. Edward Bowell discovered this asteroid in 1982. This was a great honor for Schelte Bus.
What has Schelte Bus discovered?
In 1981, Schelte Bus found a comet called 87P/Bus. Since 1975, he has found or helped find over a thousand asteroids.
Some of his important discoveries include:
- 2135 Aristaeus: This is an Apollo asteroid. It will pass close to Earth in 2147. It will be about 13 moon distances away.
- An Amor asteroid.
- More than 40 Jupiter trojans. These are asteroids that share Jupiter's orbit.
- The first Jupiter Trojan he found was 3240 Laocoon. He found it with Eleanor F. Helin.
Bus also discovered asteroids named after famous science fiction writers. These are 5020 Asimov and 4923 Clarke.
