Schmirn's History

The Schmirn valley has a long history. Long ago, the ancient Romans came into the valley. They used a mountain pass called Tux Jöchl. The Romans used the valley for grazing their animals.

The name "Schmirn" was first written down in 1249. Back then, it was called "Vallis Smurne." This means "Schmirn Valley." Schmirn became its own independent town in 1811. For a long time, until 1926, the village of Hintertux was also part of Schmirn. Hintertux is located in the Ziller Valley.

The Saint Joseph Church

A beautiful church was built in Schmirn between 1756 and 1757. It is dedicated to Saint Joseph. The church was designed in a style called Baroque. This style is known for its fancy and detailed decorations. The church became a parish (its own church district) in 1778. It was later fixed up and restored in 1958 and 1959.

Village Band

In 1831, a man named Franz Fuchs III started the village band. This band is still playing music today!
