A Look at Schoonderlogt Estate
Schoonderlogt estate is a private property, meaning people live there and it's not open for visitors. It includes a large country house, a farm, and a barn.
Its Story Through Time
The original farm building at Schoonderlogt was taken down around the year 1900. The owner at that time, named Gaymans, decided to build the country house that we see today. Along with the main house, a new farm and barn were also built.
World War II Connection
Schoonderlogt played an important part in World War II. During the war, it became the main base, or "headquarters," for the 2nd Battalion of the U.S. Army's 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. This group was part of the American 101st Airborne Division.
The 101st Airborne Division was a famous group of soldiers who parachuted from planes or landed in gliders. They arrived in the Netherlands on September 17, 1944, near Eindhoven.
During a battle known as "The Island," the Schoonderlogt farm served as a temporary headquarters for the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. There is a well-known photograph of Major Richard D. Winters, a famous soldier from the war, standing in front of the estate's entrance gate.
A Famous TV Show Link
Schoonderlogt estate is also featured in the popular TV miniseries called Band of Brothers. This show was created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks and tells the true story of a group of American soldiers during World War II.
Because of its appearance in Band of Brothers, many tourists visit Schoonderlogt each year. Even though thousands of people come to see it, it's important to remember that the estate is private property and not open to the public.
Remembering the Heroes
In 2020, a special memorial was placed in front of the estate. This memorial honors the 101st Airborne Division and the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment for their bravery during the war.
