Sclerophrys is a group, or genus, of "true toads." These toads are mostly found in Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula.
For a long time, all these toads were part of a different group called Bufo. But scientists later realized that the toads in Sclerophrys were different enough to have their own special group. This new group was first named Amietophrynus.
In 2016, scientists Ohler and Dubois discovered something important. They found that a toad named Sclerophrys capensis was actually the same as the toad that the Amietophrynus group was based on. Since the name Sclerophrys was given first, it became the official name for the group. This means Amietophrynus is now considered an older, less used name for the same group.
